Rx Yoga: Choose Choice™

Today, I am going to share a secret with you. I am going to teach you something about yoga that most people do not know: how to use yoga poses as a prescription to change your life.

Two powerful results spark my desire to share this information: awareness and choice.

The more one learns about yoga, the more important these tools become. At first, any class, any teacher and any pose can get the job done. After a while, though, this may not continue to be true.

Choice or Stress: Which Is Right for You?

Choice. It is a powerful word, one that places its commander at the helm of the ship.

We often hear people say: I do not have a choice. I have to do this.” “I have to do that.

These statements are dangerous. They plant the seeds for so much stress in our world.

I already can hear how you are responding: But I have to do certain things. I have to work, and there is no way around it.

Is that true?

P-Training: The Hottest New Trend in Fitness

We salivate every time a new fitness ad tempts us: Try this today! Get results tomorrow!

The fitness industry is constantly churning out the next quick fix. What starts as a desire to improve our health usually gets muddied by a desire to make money.

Unfortunately for us, the promise of instant results is frequently dishonest and disheartening. It holds us hostage in a perpetual cycle of hope and disappointment as we desperately guess about what will work now, later or ever.

Self Regulation Skills: Five Steps to Becoming Unbelievably Patient

How does one become adept at yoga? Simply. Through patience and self regulation skills.

Timely conversations always seem to happen, well, at the right moment. Just before I sat down to write this post, I spoke to the friend who had set me up on a blind date with my first yoga class nine years ago.

After hearing us talk, my girlfriend asked whether he still practiced yoga. Not really, I responded. She looked at me a bit confused and asked why not. I smiled and replied, “Because that is the hardest part of practicing.”

The Power of Patience and the Choice to Shake Stress

As I sit here on the beach in Costa Rica, one word keeps gently crashing into my mind: patience.

What I see and feel is that patience has become a lost art. We are told, especially in the West, that we deserve and should receive everything we want – now. But this is a lie and a major source of stress.

The art of cultivating patience is multifaceted. It involves patience for one’s body, mind, spirit and, ultimately, one’s life. This same encompassing view of patience also applies to everyone and everything that we encounter in life – regardless of whether we agree with them.

My American Fear

I was teaching, coaching and training full time. The results were mind-boggling.

As I worked with clients on polishing their interiors, their exteriors began to shine too. They looked, talked and acted differently. Their pace of life and energy shifted. Their lives transformed.

Every metamorphosis that I witnessed astounded me: Losing 20 to 30 pounds. Developing clearer and brighter skin. Attaining raises and promotions. Establishing businesses. Moving abroad. Getting engaged. Feeling calm for the first time.

From Failure to Freedom

My second superpower is my intuition. I do not analyze before I act. I just get a feeling – and go for it.

Within six months to a year of taking my first yoga class, I knew that I wanted to be a yoga teacher.

My practice had evolved from excruciating to emancipating. I remember forming triangle pose one class and thinking: “Huh. This is no longer miserable.” I developed flexibility, strength and body awareness. As I witnessed how quickly and deeply yoga was transforming me, I wanted to share it with others.

From “Success” to Stress

In early 2006, I found myself working my way up the corporate ladder. The only things on my mind were money and status. I had graduated from a top business school and was primed to become rich and powerful. I was also well on my way to becoming an asshole.

I have always known that I was born to be a leader. By my early 20s, I also had the car, the beach apartment, the clothes and the attitude to prove it. I felt as if I were on the path to achieving everything I had ever wanted.

Eat to Transform Your Body and Life

Backpacking through South America five years ago, I met an Adonis.

As I arrived at a whitewater-rafting trip one early morning, I stared in awe at a tall, shirtless blond who was smiling and buzzing with energy. Unlike my typical crushes, the object of my admiration was not a woman. It was a Greek god.

The man was an eccentric pharmacist from the United States named Kirk. He was an enigma – super scientific, but also kind of a bro. I felt drawn to him.

I was bursting with questions about how he possessed such a muscular and lean body.
