The Carrot and the Cow

A few years ago, I learned a powerful lesson on a peculiar date with a particular woman.

The woman was into wellness. A little too into wellness.

It felt extreme when she requested that I pick her up at the gym. But that proved mild compared with her interpretation of a dinner date.

When she got into my car, I invited her participation in selecting a restaurant. She responded that she had brought her dinner with her.

Seriously?

The Path to the Perfect Body and Why You Don’t Want It

I recently found a picture of myself from three years ago. I could not believe how ripped I was! Muscles everywhere, almost glistening in the light.

At the time, I was laser-focused on my diet, weightlifting program and yoga practice. I was enslaved to my body’s form – obsessed with how it looked and what it could do. I was in physical pain from exercising so much. If I missed a session, I got a workout in guilt.

My body looked better than it ever has. But I could not see or appreciate it. I thought that my body was not in that good of shape.

Getting Clean: 10 Simple Steps to Generate Global Change

“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle and the life of the candle will not be shortened.”

The Buddhist poster emblazoning this quote on my office wall is a simple decoration from Ross. But it lights a flame inside me every time that I read it.

It reminds me to shine bright in the face of fear. It reminds me to accept the good and the bad.

Choice or Stress: Which Is Right for You?

Choice. It is a powerful word, one that places its commander at the helm of the ship.

We often hear people say: I do not have a choice. I have to do this.” “I have to do that.

These statements are dangerous. They plant the seeds for so much stress in our world.

I already can hear how you are responding: But I have to do certain things. I have to work, and there is no way around it.

Is that true?

Happy or Bust!

It is taking over the Internet. It is creeping across the walls at yoga studios. It is infesting the TV and books that we consume. And we are pouring time, money and energy into catching it: HAPPINESS!

The signal pulsing the following message at us is becoming oppressive: If you are not happy, something is wrong with you.

Build Your Nutrition From The Ground Up

This month’s blogs focus on building strong foundations in your wellness practices to set yourself up for success and to enjoy the freedom this yields. Understanding the basics of nutrition is essential to create a diet that serves you.

Many of us are confused about what and how to eat. There is a lot of information about nutrition available, and much of it is crap. The amount of contradictions among sources makes it nearly impossible to know what or who is correct. One article proves going vegan is the only way to go, while the next article proves that it is life-threatening. It is a mess out there.

Squats Are For Mondays

In last week’s blog, I wrote about the importance of focusing on the feet and legs in your yoga practice. This week, we’ll learn how to do weighted squats in order to build a strong foundation for your exercise regimen.

Many yoga teachers shun weight lifting, and many weight lifters scoff at the idea of incorporating yoga into their exercise routine. I say everybody needs to relax and consider how different modalities can be beneficial regardless of their origins. If your goal is to hold Warrior II longer, then incorporate the squat to build leg strength. If you want to perform a full squat, then incorporate Warrior II to increase groin flexibility.

Audaciously S.M.A.R.T. Goals

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; thoughts become things. I’ve been diving into a classic book entitled “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill, who takes this even further when he says: “Money is the transmutation of desire into it’s tangible equivalent.” What he’s saying is that whatever you desire must first be conceived in the intangible world of thought before it can be brought into the physical world of form. The act of writing down your thoughts brings this process one step closer to reality as it directly transfers your desires into something you can see, touch and feel.

Who’s Driving The Bus? Why We Hold Ourselves Back From Our Dreams

Last week marked my completion of another 50 hour block of advanced yoga training; which I have been taking part in for the past year. I spent the week really getting to know my mind, including all of its little tricks and all the ways it tries to hide things from me. It was also an opportunity to evaluate the areas of my life that are working and uncover the aspects that aren’t.  Overall, the experience has created a desire to share some of my takeaways from the week, not only to put down on paper what I think I have learned, but also to inspire others to become happier and healthier through the process.

A Calorie Is Not A Calorie

Yesterday, while chatting with a long term client about nutrition, we came to the controversial topic of whether or not the calories from fruit effect our bodies the same way the calories from grains do. Our conversation got me thinking and I’ve come to this stance: a calorie is not a calorie. Let me repeat that again, a calorie is not a calorie. Stop counting them, stop trying to understand them and stop rating your workouts by how many you burn. In fact, from here on out, forget you’ve ever even heard of calories. Calories aren’t worth your time. This may sound shocking, but I never count calories and neither do many others who understand nutrition. Without counting calories I hover at around 12% body fat (that’s far above average). One of my colleagues eats over 3,000 calories a day from fruit alone and maintains himself at 5% body fat (that’s professional athlete level)! He’s not concerned with his calorie intake either. There is a lack of understanding in the health and wellness world which tries to sell everyone on the ole “calorie in, calorie out” lie. The amount of calories in a banana effect you differently than the same calories in ice-cream because they are bio-nutritionally built differently. If this weren’t true then “calories in and calories out” would be correct and we could all maintain healthy body weights by limiting calories . If you’ve ever dieted before (and who hasn’t) you know this doesn’t work. So let’s take some time today and look at how calories effect us and how calories are not calories.
